South grad Williams opts for OVU

PARKERSBURG – Ohio Valley University head volleyball coach Paul Jacoby has added Parkersburg South graduate Kasey Williams to the Fighting Scots’ roster.

Williams, a three-year letterwinner for the Patriots of head coach Becky Bennett, earned Class AAA second team all-state honors last year. She helped Parkersburg South to the state tournament for a second consecutive season and produced nearly 300 kills and as many digs.

She also served at 96 percent, was a 90 percent passer and was an 84 percent hitter.

Although she had her final decision narrowed down between OVU and fellow Division II program Glenville State College, the Fighting Scots won out in the end.

“I was almost committed to Glenville and the whole five-year degree helped me make my decision and made me feel a lot more fortunate knowing that I will have a plan for my future and get it all taken care of in one session instead of having to go back to school to get my masters. It made sense to me,” said Williams, who plans to major in elementary education and also earn her masters at OVU following her undergraduate work.

The former Patriot also earned two letters in basketball and was a four-year letterwinner for the track team. This past spring, she placed fourth in both the open 100 and 200 meter sprints at the state meet in Charleston.

Williams said she will move in on campus a week from this Saturday. Her first college practice and classes start on Monday, Aug. 18.

“It’s going to be a hectic day,” said Williams, a first team all-Ohio Valley Athletic Conference volleyball selection who finished with a 3.7 cumulative GPA at PSHS, which included a 4.2 GPA during her final grading period.

“It’s definitely going to be a change because high school is a lot easier, but I think I’m up for the challenge.”

Playing time as a freshman could happen for Williams, who said coach Jacoby told her there was an opening for a backside hitter.

“I don’t want to assume anything,” added Williams, who with academic and athletic scholarship money will have her education paid for. “I’m just going to do my best. I know I’m a freshman, but I hope I can get a spot.
