Meet the Team nights set for PHS, South
Parkersburg South: Parkersburg South fans are aware of the ongoing fundraising project to erect new bleachers on the home side of the Erickson All-Sports Facility.
They may also be interested in another project that should enhance their game-night experience at the Camden Avenue stadium.
Past attempts to equip the scoreboard with a video board have met with limited success. But Jay Jones, who has worked tirelessly to improve Erickson, says it appears the video board will be functional this season.
He’s hoping to collect some of the most memorable plays in South football history and show them on the big screen.
South will conduct its annual Meet The Team night on Tuesday, Aug. 19.
Gates open at 5 p.m. with introduction of fall sports teams at 6 p.m. and the football team’s Blue/White Scrimmage at 7 p.m.
Performances include the South marching band, Southern Belles and the Patriot cheerleaders.
Parkersburg High: Parkersburg High School’s football team will conduct its annual Ice Cream Social on Friday at Stadium Field, with gates opening at 5:30 p.m.
Members of the football team will be introduced and the PHS Red Wings and cheerleaders will perform.
Tickets for ice cream and dessert are $3 and other food items will be available.
Calhoun County: Following a winless campaign in 2013, Calhoun County head coach Michael Fitzwater said it appears as though his Red Devils will have less than two dozen players this fall.
“The numbers are down and we have 20 kids, but I’m really pleased with the guys we have,” said the coach. “We’ve got several returning starters. Pretty much of our team is back except a couple of players. It’s probably the best offensive line we’ve had since I’ve been here.”
With camp just now underway, it appears Cole Ritchie and Seth Moore will handle the bulk of the running attack. Junior Casey Ritchie and freshman Caden Hicks are fighting for the starting signal-caller position.
Fitzwater had five players move up from the middle school squad and the Red Devils are still hoping to land a second scrimmage. Currently, Calhoun County’s lone scrimmage will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, at Paden City.
“We might have one on the 16th,” said the coach, who noted the yet to be determined continued running of the after school activities bus hasn’t helped with the football numbers.
“They are running a bus this week, but we’re not sure what’s happening after that. We’re still up in the air.”
