Football camps underway

From staff reports

Roane County

Things are looking pretty good for the Roane County Raiders of head coach Paul Burnside.

The squad from Spencer has made the Class AA playoffs for five straight campaigns and the Raiders aren’t looking to do anything different this year, except to make some noise once they get there.

“We’ve got our best overall numbers we’ve had probably since 2004 or 2005,” said Burdette, who had 52 players out for the team. That included 18 incoming freshmen. “I knew coming at the end of June our numbers were going to be higher than they had been.

“At the end of June we were carrying 38 guys through that two and a half weeks. Then we carried 25 to 30 the rest of the summer for lifting and conditioning. I knew it was going to be better than what we had.”

Roane County actually started practice the first minute they were able to this week by conducting a midnight madness on Sunday night/Monday morning.

“We went from about midnight until about 1:30 (a.m.) or quarter till 2 (a.m.),” added the coach. “They took showers, got some snacks, laid down in the wrestling room and went to sleep.”

The Raiders will conduct their first scrimmage at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16 at Nitro. At 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22 the Raiders will play host to Sissonville at Spencer Middle School.

Also of note, the Glenville State College football team will have a scrimmage at County Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 23. The scrimmage, which is free to the public, will go from 5-6:30 p.m. Prior to that, from 3:30-4:30 p.m., the GSC coaching staff and players will conduct a youth clinic.

Tyler Consolidated

When Tyler Consolidated broke camp this week, head coach Ryan Walton welcomed 32 players to practice.

If the Silver Knights are looking for senior leadership, defensive tackle Nick Anderson will have quite a load to carry since he is the lone senior on the roster.

This year, Walton is emphasizing the play of his offensive line, led by Kordell Stewart and Devon Harris at the tackles and Dylan Glover at guard.

Tyler Consolidated enjoyed a five-game winning streak last season before losing their last game of the regular season at Bishop Donahue. The Silver Knights, who open at home on Aug. 29 against Williamstown, closed out the campaign at 5-5.
