St. Marys Post 79 erupts for 26 runs
RIPLEY – St. Marys Post 79 scored 17 runs in its last two at-bats to pull away from host Ripley Post 107 to register a 26-10, six-inning American Legion baseball win Tuesday night at Ray Swisher Field.
St. Marys, now 7-5, burst out to an 8-1 lead after the first inning and a half. Jarrod Lough, who singled in a first-inning run, tagged a three-run homer in a five-run second that also saw an RBI double from Hayden Hizer and RBI single off the bat of Michael Stout.
Ripley (7-4) though closed the deficit to 9-6 with a five-run third, with Luke Layhew and Ethan Stepp contributing RBI singles, then got within 9-7 in the fourth on Johnny Stepp’s sacrifice fly.
But a 10-run St. Marys fifth frame – highlighted by only two hits, but seven walks (three with the bases loaded), two hit by pitches with the bases loaded, and three wild pitches that played runs – upped the lead to 19-7. Tyler Davis also singled in two of the 10 tallies.
However, Ripley staved off being 10-runned in the bottom of the fifth by scoring three runs for a 19-10 game on consecutive RBI singles by Ethan Stepp, Remy Boyce and Jarred Bumpus.
But a seven-run top of the sixth finished off Ripley as two more runs were walked in, Zach Heasley and Michael Fox had run-scoring singles, Davis doubled in two run and Braden Barnhart hit a sacrifice fly.
