Medalist honors go to Moore at PCC

VIENNA -Arriving in the first group to turn in its results, Cole Moore set a target that nobody could surpass.

Monday at the Callaway Junior Tour’s stop at Parkersburg Country Club, Moore represented the lone golfer to break par while shooting 1-under 72. In addition to winning his age group (15-16), the Roane County High School golfer brought home the award for United Bank Low Round of the Day.

Moore’s round featured just one bogey to go along with two birdies. On the plus side, he reached 15 greens in regulation. But on the down side, he took 32 putts.

“The 15 greens is awesome, but the putts not so much,” Moore said. “I didn’t have any three-putts and that’s been my problem a lot of times.”

A total of six age division winners were recognized, including former Marietta High School golfer Seth Vannoy, who claimed the 17-18 age group with an even par 73. Vannoy lived in St. Clairsville the past two years and is planning to join the men’s golf program at Alderson-Broaddus College in the fall.

“It just seemed to be pars all the way around,” Vannoy said. “I had a couple of birdies, and when I seemed to make a mess of things it wasn’t that bad and made bogey at worse.”

Today will be a homecoming of sorts when the Callaway Junior Tour makes its way across the river to Marietta Country Club. Vannoy is seeking his third win for his age group. He also has two fifth place showings to his credit.

“I played Marietta Country Club quite a bit when we lived here,” Vannoy said. “I played decent there, but I’ve gotten a lot better so hopefully I can improve upon my game there.”

Josef Dransfeld, 14-year-old from Huntington St. Joe, didn’t let a double-bogey midway into his round derail his game and took first place in the 13-14 age division with a 1-over 74.

Rounding out the boys age division winners was Sam White carding a 79 in the 12-and-under division. On the girls side, Parkersburg High School’s Whitney Milhoan enjoyed the home-course advantage and shot a 7-over 81 to claim the 15-18 age division and the Girls Low Round of the Day. For ages 10-14, Hurricane’s Olivia Hart was medalist with a 99.

“I had two bad holes on the front nine then I kicked it in from there – I realized what I needed to do to fix my swing,” said Milhoan, who fired a 1-over 38 on the front nine. “It helped a lot playing on my home course considering I knew how to read the greens.”

Battling ankle problems throughout the summer, Parkersburg County Club was Milhoan’s first tournament on the Callaway Junior Tour.

“I’ve been in casts for my ankles,” Milhoan said. “The walk today was painful and it hurts, but I made it through.”

Moore also had taken time off and put the clubs away while attending church camp in Ripley recently. He is just now getting acclimated in time for the West Virginia Open beginning Monday at The Resort at Glade Springs.

“I haven’t played in a week, so as far as the 72 I’m digging it,” Moore said. “I do have to straighten out the driver. I was hitting a cut all day.”

Giving Moore a strong challenge was Marietta High School golfer Jeffrey Hensler, who finished runner-up at 2-over 75.

“My short game was really good today and my driver was playing really well,” Hensler said. “I started on the ninth hole and double-bogeyed No. 10. My front side was better because I shot even par, while the back nine was a little bit of a struggle.

“With that 75, I knew there would be some good golfers out there but I would be in contention. Cole played well today.”
