Extra Innings

PARKERSBURG – Parkersburg Post 15’s season came to an end Thursday night in an 11-inning, 12-10 loss to the visiting West Virginia Power squad in an American Legion Area 3 losers’ bracket tournament game at Hank Greenburg Field.

Still, Post 15 (21-20) made a valiant comeback from being down 10-2 after 4 1/2 innings with eight runs in the sixth through eighth innings to knot the count at 10-10 and force two extra frames before the final outcome was decided.

And that occurred in the 11th when the Power (10-17) got to Post 15 starter Eli Gray, who hurled the entire game, for a pair of tallies on back-to-back RBI singles by Austin Hupp and Justin Palmer.

In the bottom of the 11th for Post 15, Dakota Watson walked to lead off, but three consecutive outs followed to end the game.

The only lead for Post 15 was 1-0 in the last of the first inning on a walk, sacrifice and two errors.

The Power plated three runs in the second on Matt Chandler’s two-run triple and Kaleb Kinder’s RBI single before Post 15 got a run back in its half of the second on Rex Windland’s infield single.

Then, though, the Power put up the next seven scores – a single run on an error in the third, four more in the fourth on Hupp’s double, an error, a Palmer single and a groundout, and two in the fifth on a Palmer double and Seth Roadcap’s run-scoring infield single – to surge out to a 10-2 advantage.

Post 15 began its eight-run rally in the sixth with a 3-spot on a two-run single by Watson and RBI single by Windland, followed in the seventh by Gray’s RBI single and in the eighth with four more on a two-run error, Devon Crews’ sacrifice fly and another Power miscue.

In fact in the Post 15 eighth, the home team had no hits, but took advantage of two errors, five walks and a hit batter to tie up the score – and still left the bases loaded.

But Post 15 didn’t fare well in the two extra innings, being mastered by fire-balling Power reliever Cam Norris, who struck out four of the seven batters he faced in a game-winning stint on the mound.
