Athens tops Post 15, 15-12, in nine innings

THE PLAINS, Ohio – Parkersburg Post 15 built a 9-2 lead, but couldn’t hold onto it as host Athens Post 21 rallied for a 15-12, nine-inning American Legion baseball win Wednesday night at Athens High School.

Post 15, now 16-12, had it all going its way for a while though. Parkersburg jumped on top 2-0 in its first at-bat, scoring both on a Cole Parker double. Athens knotted the count at 2-2 in the second on a two-run triple by Austin Downs.

Post 15 then put up a 7-spot in the fourth frame on RBI hits by Kyle Goodwin Clayton Cottrille, Rex Windland and Lucas Goodwin, a sacrifice fly from Parker, a bases-loaded hit by pitch by Cary Casto and Josh Stephens’ run-scoring groundout.

But an Athens’ five-run bottom of the fourth closed the gap to 9-7. Then after Stephens doubled in Post 15’s 10th run in the fifth, Athens took the lead for good at 13-10 with a two-run sixth and four-run seventh.

Post 15, however, got within 13-12 in the top of the eighth on Casto’s RBI double and Lucas Goodwin being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, only see Athens add two more tallies in the last of the eighth to salt away the win.

Post 15, which was hamstrung Wednesday by having only the minimum nine players available, next plays at Beverly/Lowell Post 389/750 in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Fort Frye High School.
