Edison captures Wood County all-sports title

Thanks to winning Wood County championships in five sports and claiming the runner-up spot in five others, Edison Middle School came out on top in the year-long competition for the Wood County Middle School All-Sports Trophy.

Edison accumulated 112 points to 103 for runner-up Jackson. Hamilton was third with 98 points followed by Blennerhassett with 92.5, Williamstown (54) and VanDevender (43.5).

Edison has won the all-sports trophy six times, four of those since Wood County went to the middle school system in the 2007-2008 school year.

Edison had won three straight titles before being dethroned last year by its south Parkersburg rival, Blennerhassett.

The Eagles had a strong winter program, claiming county titles in 7-8th grade girls basketball, 6th grade boys basketball and wrestling. Edison added to its team championships at the Wood County track meet, as the Eagles swept the boys titles, winning both the 6th and 7-8th grade crowns.

Edison had five teams finish second during the school year: golf, volleyball, cheer competition, 7-8 grade boys basketball and 6th grade girls track.

The all-sports trophy has been a Wood County tradition since it first was presented following the 1986-87 school year, with Jackson Junior High claiming the initial championship. Points are awarded to each school in each sport based upon their finish following the county championship.
