Belpre primed for TVC Hocking track meet today

BELPRE – Belpre’s boys track team will be seeking its fourth straight TVC Hocking Division track championship today, starting at 4:30 p.m., at Meigs High School in Pomeroy.

“Our boys’ chances are looking pretty good,” said Golden Eagle head boys coach Chris Palmer. “We’re taking some kids out of a couple relays to put them in other events to score more points, including some going for high point (honors).

Meanwhile on the girls side of the conference meet today, Palmer sees the Belpre squad engaged in a duel with Eastern and Waterford in “an extremely-competitive” TVC Hocking contest. “We hope the girls do their best,” said Palmer. “They should be at the time of the season when they’re getting their PRs (personal records).”

Palmer singled out a few boys he expects to do well today, starting with junior Sam Petty in the 100, 200 and long jump and as the 4×200 anchor, sophomore Matthew Colvin in the 200, senior Devin Daniell in the 100 and long jump, and sophomore Cray Sistrunk in the 400, 800, 1600 and 3200.

In the field events, junior Matt Lopreste will be competing in the high jump and pole vault for Belpre, along with Ian Johnson in the pole vault and sophomore Hunter Burkey in the high jump – “and any of them have the chance to win the TVC in any of those events,” said Palmer.

“We have a shot to win most of the events we’re in.” said Palmer, who views Eastern and Southern as the Belpre boys’ chief competition today.

For Belpre’s girls, top performers today, according to Palmer, should be senior Taryn Carr in the hurdles and as a relay anchor; the Barker sisters, junior Sierra and freshman Cheyenne; freshman Lindsay Stanley in the long jump; and sophomore Deanna Darrach in the high jump. “So we’ve got kids where we need them to be,” said Palmer. “Hopefully, they’ll perform to their best.”

“From now on, it gets serious,” stated Palmer, with the district meet, then regional and finally the state championship to follow the TVC over the next month.
