MC splits with Mount Aloysius

MARIETTA-The No. 18-ranked Marietta College Pioneers split a non-conference doubleheader with Mount Aloysius College Wednesday afternoon at Don Schaly Stadium. The Pioneers posted a 4-0 win in the first game, but dropped game two by the score of 5-4. Marietta is 13-7 overall, while the Mounties are 7-11 on the season.

Three Pioneers combined on the game one shutout. Sophomore Christian Herstine (4-1) started on the mound and worked three innings. He allowed three hits and struck out six. Freshman Jim Luyster threw threw innings of one-hit ball, while junior Mike Fulton tossed a perfect seventh inning.

Marietta left fielder Josh Ungerbuehler got the Pioneers on the scoreboard in the second inning. Ungerbuehler led off with a single through the left side and then moved to second on a wild pitch. A balk sent him to third, from where he scored on a ground out by designated hitter Chris Winpigler.

Sophomore right fielder Tim McCoy made it 2-0 with a towering home run over the right field wall to start the Pioneers’ third inning. It was McCoy’s first round-tripper of the season.

Marietta added a couple of insurance runs in the fifth. Ungerbuehler was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Winpigler followed with a double to the wall in left-center, scoring Ungerbuehler.

A sacrifice bunt from Jevin Johnston moved Winpigler to third, from where he scored on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Hanahan.

The second game came down to the seventh inning tied at 4-4. The Mounties got a one-out single from Benjamin Legath. A sacrifice bunt moved Legath into scoring position with two outs. Jesse Bortner hit a slow chopper between the mound and first base that the Pioneers misplayed, allowing Legath to come around and score the winning run.

Marietta hosts Muskingum Saturday for a 1 p.m. Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader.
