Encore performance for PHS Sports Carnival

PARKERSBURG – Last year, following a 17-year absence, Parkersburg High School brought back its annual Sports Carnival.

Following that successful return, this year’s event will take place on Friday night at Memorial Fieldhouse with intramural championships beginning at 6:15 p.m. and the entertainment getting under way at 8 p.m.

The theme for this year’s event is House of Rock and will feature such hits as Jailhouse Rock, For Those About To Rock and Rock N Roll Dream.

“The response to last year’s event was huge,” said Kimberly Griffey, who is coordinating the show along with Kristin Minnite.

Tickets are on sale at the Parkersburg High School Athletic Office for $5 during school hours. Tickets at the door will be $7.

Five intramural events will start off the program with PHS students competing in volleyball, basketball, arm wrestling, table tennis and corn hole.

Once the athletic part of the program is completed, the entertainment portion will begin with a dance fitness group performing to Swing The Mood.

The Big Red cheerleading squad will perform a cheer dance and will be followed by the PHS Jazz Band, the Red Wing Drill Team performing to Jailhouse Rock and an exhibition by NJROTC.

In between breaks in the various performances, several tug-of-war competitions pitting various classes against one another will take place.

Other events include the traditional waltz, performed to Can I Have This Dance, the Red Wings and cheerleaders combining their efforts to For Those About To Rock, performances by the PHS Jazz Band, and the Red Wings closing to the Rock N’ Roll Dream medley.

No Sports Carnival would be complete without the living statues and that tradition will continue as Daniel Fox, Chandler Hamilton, Trapper Hays, Thomas Martin and Melvin Stubbs were selected to do the honors. They will be joined by the first female ever selected to be a living statue, Tara Foster.

Concessions available will include popcorn, pizza and water.

The return of the Sports Carnival has created a lot of buzz around PHS ever since last year’s performance came off as such a hit, participants and spectators have been waiting for an encore performance.

That performance will take place on Friday night.
