A-B sweeps Ohio Valley softball

VIENNA – Ariel Cammin blasted a pair of homers and Megan LaFon recorded two mound triumphs as visiting Alderson-Broaddus spoiled Ohio Valley University’s senior day here Saturday afternoon at Jackson Park by sweeping a Great Midwest Athletic Conference softball twinbill by scores of 2-1 and 10-5.

Fighting Scot left-hander Kristine Brown was charged with both losses, but easily could’ve had a different fate in the opener.

Cammin had a solo bomb to center in the second inning for A-B (20-24, 12-6) and the score stood at 1-0 until the home half of the fifth when Leigh Murphy reached on an infield single and scored on Kelly Ferneding’s RBI groundout.

OVU had the bases loaded in the sixth with one out, but failed to score. A-B got the game-winning RBI via a Hannah Copenhaver one-out double that plated Emily Morton in the top of the seventh.

The Fighting Scots, who return home for a 2 p.m. makeup doubleheader today versus Davis & Elkins, made the first two outs in the bottom of the seventh at home. Catcher Danielle Page started the inning with a walk and stole second. Although pinch-hitter Bethany Wedmore hit a comebacker to LaFon, the dugout yelled for her to go to third and she ended up not making a play.

With runners on the corners, OVU (14-28, 5-13) skipper Rob Graham called for a squeeze, but Chanel Bouchard’s bunt was fielded by third baseman Bianca Officer, who fired home to Morton for the easy tag out. Still, with runners on first and second and just one out, OVU had another chance with Maddi Wallace at the dish. However, that went awry when she reached on an infield single that Battler second baseman Tori Patteson managed to knock down. An alert Patteson hurried to the ball and fired it home to nail Wallace. Brown did draw a two-out walk to load the bases, but Donna O’Bryant lined out on the first pitch right back to LaFon to end it.

In the second game, A-B jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead thanks to first inning RBIs by Kylee Gaspar, Cammin – via a double -and Whitney Brown.

Regan Drake, who went 4 for 4 and scored thrice, doubled in the third and scored on Officer’s RBI single for a 4-0 cushion.

Ohio Valley fought back with a five-run bottom of third, which was aided by three A-B errors. Brown had the big hit with a two-run single and Murphy had the other RBI.

A-B put the game out of reach by scoring three more times in both the fifth and seventh innings. Drake crushed a two-run bomb to left in the fifth and Cammin added an RBI. In the seventh, Cammin capped her big day with a three-run shot to left-center off Ohio Valley relief pitcher Jordan Cunningham.

Seniors Bouchard, O’Bryant, Allyson Shepherd and Caroline Vinesett were honored during a pregame ceremony.
