BACF sweep for Ohio

PARKERSBURG – Outscoring host West Virginia 43-28 in the second half, the Ohio girls claimed a 74-60 BACF Basketball Classic victory Saturday night at Parkersburg South to take a 7-6 lead in the series.

Ohio had jumped off to a quick 9-0 start on three treys by Ashley Frashure of Logan and led throughout the first half until a late W.Va. rally pushed the hosts into a 32-31 lead at halftime.

Then though came the second half, which saw the Ohio squad regain the lead at 36-34 on a 3-ball by Fort Frye’s Brooke Borich at 18:41 and kept it the rest of the way to secure the win.

Jackson’s Lydia Poe was named the Ohio MVP with a game-high 16 points, 13 coming in the second half.

Hannah DeBruin of Athens netted 12 points, while Borich added 10 for Ohio.

For West Virginia, St. Marys’ Kendra Walker was the MVP with a 13-point night. Sierra Jordan of Cabell Midland and Rachel Lee of Huntington St. Joseph tallied eight each, while Asia Pettite of St. Joe tallied seven.

After the 9-0 lead, Ohio upped its advantage to 16-6 at the 11:32 mark on a three-point play by Marietta’s Starr Johnson, who followed that with a steal for a layup. By 7:00, the lead had reached double figures at 25-14 on an inside bucket by Poe.

But at 31-22 with 3:53 to play in the first half, a 10-0 W.Va. run up to intermission propelled the hosts on top.

Ripley’s Sarah Williams’ trey began the spurt, Jordan scored inside, Lee connected from 3-point range at 27.7 seconds and Wirt County’s Miriam Smith got a hoop with just two seconds left to complete the run.

After Borich’s go-ahead trey for Ohio 1:19 into the second half, the lead stretched to 60-42 with 10:45 remaining from just 48-42 on a 12-0 burst. Baskets by DeBruin and Eastern’s Katie Keller preceded back-to-back treys and finally two free throws by Poe.

However, West Virginia wasn’t done just yet, closing the gap to 62-55 by the 3:22 mark, only to see a 7-0 Ohio run put the game on ice with 2:34 to go as a trey and two straight DeBruin baskets upped the lead to 68-55.

“I think our team did a heck of a job in sharing the basketball,” said Ohio head coach Jon Buchanan of Proctorville Fairland. “I didn’t feel like anybody was out there for themselves – everybody was looking for the open man – and it really paid off in the second half when we got some open shots and knocked them down.”
