Offensive explosion for Yellowjackets

WILLIAMSTOWN – Williamstown could not have written a better script to open the final week of the regular season.

Monday night at Williamstown High School, eight different Yellowjackets combined for a season-high 13 3-pointers in a 94-46 non-conference victory against Paden City.

Before the opening tip, Williamstown honored its lone senior and Cami Mossor made the most of her recognition by scoring a game-high 21 points. Mossor had a hand with one 3-pointer, while BreeAnn Reynolds came off the bench and accounted for four treys as part of a 15-point effort. Another reserve, Heather Albertson, made all five attempts from the floor, including three from beyond the arc for 13 points.

The Yellowjackets, who improved to 13-7, shot 45 percent from the field overall (36-of-80) and from 3-point range (13-of-29).

“We just got hot on Paden City, and they have a good basketball team,” Williamstown coach Fred Sauro said. “A lot of times our percentage has been low, but tonight it was high.”

Williamstown actually trailed midway in the first quarter. Four free throws from Hannah Stanley was part of a six-point spurt which put Paden City in front 10-8. The Wildcats, who slipped to 8-9, stayed within one at 19-18 deep into the period before the Yellowjackets began to make their move.

In a three-minute span, four different Yellowjackets knocked down a 3-pointer as part of a 16-2 run. With 3 1/2 minutes still remaining before intermission, Williamstown was sitting at 45 points and enjoying a 17-point lead.

Neither side made a field goal as the first half ended, but Williamstown’s Samantha Dedrick was fouled attempting a trey as the buzzer sounded. The freshman made all three free throws to increase the gap to 49-30.

At the break, the Yellowjackets had made 10 treys against Paden City’s zone defense.

“We moved the ball and went inside-out,” Sauro said. “We would like to score more from the interior, but our interior people were rebounding and scoring. And I like that.”

Paden City struggled as the second half commenced and turned the ball over on its first four possessions. As a result, Williamstown put the Wildcats in the rear view mirror with an 8-0 run as four different starters dropped in a bucket for a 57-30 cushion.

Williamstown forced Paden City into 28 turnovers. In addition to dishing out a team-high seven assists, Williamstown freshman point guard Ashley Morris came up with five steals.

“Five of the last six games, we’ve really slowed it down,” Sauro said. “We won five of those six, but that’s not the way we like to play. We like to play up-and-down.”

Paden City never cut the deficit under 20 points the rest of the way. Stanley scored a team-high 17 points, while teammate Myah Charkawi just missed a double-double after finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds.
