Herd announces schedule
Marshall University announced its 2014 football schedule on Monday, while West Virginia University, which previously had done so, made a major change due to television.
The Mountaineers originally were scheduled to play host to Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 27 in Morgantown, but now have moved that game up a week to Saturday, Sept. 20. It was one of three Big 12 matchups moved “to provide national exposure for the matchups.”
While the game will be televised, the Big 12 did not say which network will pick up the broadcast rights.
Meanwhile, Marshall University announced its entire 12-game schedule, which features an equal amount of home and away games.
The Thundering Herd will open on Aug. 30 at Miami of Ohio and conduct its first home game the following Saturday against Rhode Island. That will be the first of two straight home contests, the only time that will happen all season, as Ohio University invades Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Sept. 13.
After that contest, it’s almost a month before the Herd is back home as it travels to Akron on Sept. 27, takes the following week off, then opens Conference USA play at Old Dominion on Oct. 4.
MU returns home on Oct. 11 against Middle Tennessee. It travels to Florida International on Oct. 18 and then is back home to play Florida Atlantic on Oct. 25.
After taking another week off, Marshall concludes it regular season by alternating away games (Southern Mississippi on Nov. 8 and Alabama-Birmingham on Nov. 22) with home games (Rice on Nov. 15 in a rematch of the Conference USA championship game, and Western Kentucky on Nov. 28).
“This is a very good schedule for us,” said MU Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick.
Conference USA will play with seven teams in the East Division and six in the West this season before Charlotte becomes its 14th member in 2015.
