French leads Warren win
LOGAN – Warren versus Athens for a Division II sectional championship figured to be an instant classic and a battle to the very end.
The Warriors made sure it wasn’t the latter.
Warren used a 23-2 run in the second quarter, led by six 3-pointers from Evan French, to pull ahead from the Bulldogs and pave the way for an 83-61 victory Friday night in front of an overflowing Jim Myers Gymnasium at Logan High School.
French, who finished with a game-high 37 points, picked up 22 of his markers in the second period to give the Warriors a 44-21 halftime advantage.
Athens took a 7-0 lead early thanks to a layup and a 3-pointer by Ryan Leuhrman, but a layup and slam dunk on consecutive possessions by Michael Hall plus French’s first basket cut it to 7-6. French put in two more field goals down the stretch of the opening period to give Warren its first lead, 10-9.
By halftime that lead had stretched to 44-21 and the Warriors were in complete control.
“When we shoot and play like that, we feel like we can beat anybody. Tonight, Athens ran into a buzz saw in the first half.”
Athens was never able to get going in the second half, at least not enough to put a dent in Warren’s lead.
The Bulldogs were held to just 33 percent (19-for-58) shooting in the game, including 4-for-24 (16.7 percent) from beyond the arch. Warren, on the other hand, was scorching from the floor, hitting 51 percent (28-of-55) of its shot attempts.
Hall scored 21 while Blake Kidder added nine to complement French’s offensive outburst for Warren. Kidder led the Warriors with nine rebounds while Aaron Mazurkiewicz contributed five assists and three steals.
