Tyler girls top Catholic, 67-47

PARKERSBURG – Visiting Tyler Consolidated jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead and never looked back in dispatching Parkersburg Catholic 67-47 in an LKC North girls basketball game Tuesday night.

The win improved the Silver Knights to 6-5 overall, while the loss dropped the Crusaderettes to an uncharacteristic 2-10 on the season.

Tyler’s two seniors, Sydney Reed and Sophia Kinnard, paved the way to the win for the Knights, who next play Thursday night when they host Valley (Wetzel). Reed gunned in 13 of her game-high 24 points in the first half, while Kinnard tallied 13 of her 21-point total in the second half.

For Catholic, which plays at Williamstown Thursday night, Alex Schaffer netted 13 points, followed by freshmen Alexis Saunders with eight and Abby Witucky with seven. In the game’s first 1:25, Reed canned a baseline shot, had a backcourt steal for a layup and finished the early flurry with a 3-point hoop for a 7-0 Tyler lead.

Rachel Gammon’s basket got PC on the board, but the Knights forged nine-point leads twice in the opening period and held a seven-point advantage (15-8) at the quarter break. But again, Tyler started strong to begin a period, racking up the initial nine points in the second stanza to surge into a 24-8 lead. Catholic, though, closed to 13 (26-13) on Saunders’ free throw at the 4:11 mark.

A Kinnard 3-ball 1:57 before the first half ended upped the margin to 18 (33-15), and that’s what the gap was (36-18) at halftime.

And Reed and Kinnard sparked Tyler out to a 21-point spread at 49-28 with 1:16 remaining in the third quarter before Schaffer bagged consecutive treys to cut the gap to 49-34 going to the final period.

However, Tyler was able to re-expand the lead in the fourth quarter, stretching it out to 23 halfway through, until a trey by Witucky with a second left made it a 20-point final.
