Quakers rout Marietta, 63-16

MARIETTA – New Philadelphia scored 28 first quarter points and 42 total in the first half to quickly bury the Marietta Tigers Friday night at Don Drumm Stadium.

The Quakers featured a balanced offensive attack, rushing for 287 yards and throwing for 238 more to accumulate 525 total yards en route to defeating MHS, 63-16.

New Philly also picked up 21 first downs on the night, many of which came on third down plays.

For the Tiger offense, it was a struggle for most of the night. Marietta’s rushers fought for 96 yards on 34 carries and had just 214 total yards against the stout Quaker defense.

Early on, New Philadelphia was able to set the tone of the game by keeping Marietta’s offense off the field.

On the first play from scrimmage for Marietta, the shotgun snap got away from quarterback John Henry and was recovered by the Quakers at the Tigers’ 34-yard line. A few plays later, Jamal Johnson took a hand-off 14 yards for a touchdown.

New Philly then lined up for the kickoff and attempted an onside try, which it recovered. That led to a 36-yard touchdown for Mitchell Pape on a screen pass from quarterback Caleb Beans.

Just like that it was 14-0, 3 minutes and 35 seconds into the game.

Marietta faced a 4th-and-1 on its next possession at its own 47, and elected to go for it. Henry was stopped for a loss on the keeper, giving the Quakers good field position.

It took New Philly two plays to get into the end zone from there. A 16-yard run by Greg Cunningham set up Beans’ 30-yard TD pass to Johnson. Graham Sabo hit the PAT to make it 21-0.

The Tigers were able to answer this time.

A 41-yard kick return by Quinton Coffield set up the Tigers at the Quaker 33. Marietta drove all the way to the 6-yard line, but would be limited to a 27-yard field goal by Brent Huck to make it 21-3.

The Quakers made it 4-for-4 on their next drive. Runs of 19 and 12 yards by Johnson helped put New Philly in the red-zone. Johnson capped the drive with a 4-yard run for paydirt, and Sabo’s kick made it 28-3.

The Tigers finally got six on their next possession. On 3rd-and-2 from their own 47, Henry scrambled to his left, avoided a sack and went deep down the sideline for Coffield. The ball was tipped by two defenders before it landed in Coffield’s hands for a 38-yard gain. Three plays later, on 3rd-and-9, Henry connected with Grae Setterstrom in the left corner of the end-zone for a 14-yard score. The PAT was blocked to make it a 28-9 game.

For the Tigers, that’s as close as things would get. New Philly struck for two more touchdowns in the second quarter, a 2-yard run by Johnson and a 55-yard pass from Beans to JoVohn Marrow, to make it 42-9 at halftime.

The Quakers added two more TDs in the third period on a 25-yard pass from Beans to Johnson and a 36-yard run by Cunningham to stretch the lead to 47 points.

Marietta would find the end zone once more in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard run by Garrett Davis to round out the scoring.

The loss dropped Marietta’s record to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the East Central Ohio League. New Philadelphia improved to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in league play.

The Tigers are back at home next Friday when they host Dover.
