PHS girls blank Eagles, 9-0
PARKERSBURG – Sophomore Abby Johnson recorded a hat trick for host Parkersburg here Tuesday night at Stadium Field as the Big Reds trounced winless South Charleston, 9-0.
The Black Eagles never recorded a shot on goal and their only shot of the game came during the 75th minute from Ashley Stricklen, but it was wide right.
Halie Hill’s unassisted tally in the 17th minute proved to be the only goal the Big Reds (4-2-2) ended up needing.
PHS, which plays host to Nitro at 6 p.m. Thursday in a varsity only tilt, ended the evening with a nifty goal thanks to a pair of ninth-graders in the 80th minute. With less than a minute left in the match, Madi Gwynn sent the Big Reds’ sixth corner kick into the box, which was directed into the net past Black Eagle keeper Kirstie Trabert (20 saves) by Rylee Stauffer.
Kacy Harmon scored via a Kristen Kupfner assist in the 23rd minute for a 2-0 lead. Three minutes later, SC’s Sidney Groom took a foot to the face and right after that Stauffer found the back of the net.
Johnson scored her first goal for a 4-0 cushion in the 34th minute when a Lauren Leaman throw-in went off a Black Eagle defender and she drilled it in. With five seconds left before the break, Johnson tallied another one, this time from a Hill assist.
Gwynn made it 6-0 in the 63rd minute following a Lauren Rinehart throw-in. A defender from SC (0-6) managed to block a shot, but Gwynn was there for an easy rebound goal.
With 14:21 left in the match, Johnson finished off her hat track and the Big Reds led 8-0 in the 73rd minute when Nilum Patel worked the ball around a defender and found an open Dani McCay, who rocketed a laser shot into the net from just beyond 20 yards.
South Charleston will attempt to register its first victory of the season come 6 p.m. Thursday.
