Parkersburg teams all will face undefeated foes
PARKERSBURG -Judging from the quality of the opponents, next Friday night could be a rough one for high school football teams from the city of Parkersburg.
That’s because Parkersburg High, Parkersburg South and Parkersburg Catholic all will be playing undefeated teams, with only the Patriots doing so at home.
South (1-1), after losing its home opener to Linsly on Friday night, will witness 2-0 Morgantown visit the Erickson All-Sports Facility for a Two Rivers Athletic Conference contest. The Mohigans not only are undefeated but are ranked No.2 in the latest Charleston Daily Mail poll.
Things are no easier for 1-0 Parkersburg High, which will travel to Ona to meet 2-0 Cabell Midland in a Mountain State Athletic Conference game. Cabell Midland has destroyed its first two opponents, Riverside and Winfield, scoring 133 points in the process.
Then there’s Parkersburg Catholic, which must travel to St. Marys for a Little Kanawha Conference showdown. The Blue Devils are 2-0 after managing to escape Elizabeth with a 7-6 win over Wirt County on Friday night.
Wood County’s other team, 2-0 Williamstown, will take a major step up in class when it travels across the Ohio River to meet 1-1 Marietta at Don Drumm Stadium in a 7:30 p.m. contest. The Tigers are 1-1 after Friday night’s loss to arch-rival Warren while Williamstown is coming off a 15-14 win over Magnolia, the 100th victory at the school for coach Terry Smith.
Other Friday night action involving Mountain State teams includes rivals Magnolia and Tyler Consolidated, both seeking their first win, meeting at 7 p.m. at Kidwell; while Little Kanawha Conference contests will witness Ritchie County traveling to Clay County in a battle of 1-1 teams; winless Calhoun County visiting West Union to meet undefeated Doddridge County; 0-2 Wirt County traveling to Glenville to meet 2-0 Gilmer County; and Ravenswood (1-0) entertaining Roane County (1-1) at Flinn Field.
Defending Class A state champion Wahama (1-1), coming off its first regular season loss in 33 games, will travel to Reedsville, Ohio, to meet Eastern, which also is 1-1. Paden City (0-2) will play host to Beallsville.
Other Tri Valley Conference games will see Belpre (1-1) traveling to Racine to meet 2-0 Southern, while in non-league games Federal Hocking (1-1) will host Hannan and Waterford (1-1) will entertain next door neighbor Fort Frye (2-0).
Other games will witness Caldwell traveling to Bridgeport in a meeting of 1-1 teams at 7 p.m., Frontier Local (1-1) visiting Buckeye Trail (0-2), also at 7, and Warren Local playing host to Athens in yet another matchup of 1-1 squads.
