Catholic rolls past Buffalo, 42-12

VIENNA – Parkersburg Catholic dominated play Saturday night in a 42-12 season-opening football win over visiting Buffalo as six different Crusaders scored touchdowns.

PCHS, which next plays at Pocahontas County at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, tallied on its first two possessions in the game played at Jackson Middle School.

Six straight Crusader carries culminated in the initial Catholic TD as Ryan Schriner sweep 5 yards around right end for a 7-0 lead at 9:32 of the first quarter.

Forcing the Bison into three 3-and-outs in a row, PC made the count 14-0 at 3:49 of the first. After quarterback Peyton Sturm scrambled for 24 yards to the Buffalo 3, Kyle Bronski rammed a yard to paydirt and Peter Keiser added another PAT.

Jake Boice’s fumble recovery at the Bison 39 set up the third Catholic score at 6:24 of the second stanza, as Boice eventually scored from two yards out before Sturm hit Nick Roedershimer with a two-point conversion pass for a 22-0 bulge.

Buffalo got on the scoreboard to make it 22-6 at the half, on a 28-yard aerial TD strike from QB Ty Smith to Jordan Tucker down the sideline with 2:12 to go before intermission.

In the third quarter, the Crusaders upped their advantage to 29-6 after taking over at the Bison 20. Catholic chased down a high snap over the punter’s head and covered the kicker, leading to a Neal Schriner’s 10-yard TD run at 8:21.

A Roedersheimer interception at the Buffalo 45 led to a Sturm 24-yard scoring scamper with four minutes left in the third for a commanding 36-6 lead.

And in the final 12 minutes of play, the two teams each notched a TD – first Catholic on a 3-yard run by Roedersheimer at 11:55 and then Buffalo to finish out the scoring at 11:35 on a 66-yard burst by Tucker.
