Semis Begin

PARKERSBURG -Parkersburg Catholic will be playing its fourth game in as many days.

Parkersburg South hasn’t played a meaningful game in more than a week.

Both the Crusaders and Patriots will be in action today as Class A and Class AAA regional baseball tournaments get under way throughout the Mountain State with semifinal contests.

Catholic (19-12) is coming off a rugged three-game series against rival Williamstown that saw the two teams split a doubleheader on Friday, setting up a one-game showdown on Saturday for the sectional title. When Catholic won that game 16-6, the Crusaders advanced to today’s regional semifinal vs. Gilmer County (28-4). The game is set for 5 p.m. at Marshall Field in Davisville. The winner will advance to Wednesday’s regional final.

The Titans and Crusaders met on April 23 in Glenville and Gilmer County emerged with a 9-7 win.

Meanwhile, Parkersburg South, which swept city rival Parkersburg High in their best-of-three sectional will travel to Wheeling for a 5 p.m. regional final against Wheeling Park. Not only do the two Ohio Valley Athletic Conference and Two Rivers Athletic Conference rivals share the same nickname -Patriots -but they also have recorded the same amount of wins -24. South has suffered eight losses while Wheeling Park has lost six times.

The Patriots met each other in a doubleheader on April 20 in Wheeling with Wheeling Park winning the opener, 2-1, and South bouncing back to win the nightcap. 8-5.

Other Class A games today involving local teams will witness Magnolia (27-4) traveling to Wheeling Central for a 6:30 p.m. regional semifinal while St. Marys (26-5) travels to Clay-Battelle (11-6), set for a 6 p.m. start.

Class AA regionals will take place on Tuesday with Ritchie County (18-11) traveling to Oak Glen for a 5 p.m. semifinal contest.
