MC’s Toth earns All-American honors

MARIETTA – Marietta College senior catcher Alex Toth was named to the All-American second team this week. A two-time first-team All-Mideast Region selection; this is Toth’s first All-American nod.

Arguably one of the best defensive catchers in the nation, regardless of division, Toth has been the Pioneers’ starting backstop for three seasons. Toth came to Marietta College as an infielder before taking over as the starting catcher at the start of his sophomore season.

Incredibly, with no experience behind the plate, Toth immediately established himself as the premier defensive catcher in Division III. In his three years behind the plate, Toth committed just seven errors in over 1,000 total defensive chances. Trying to steal on Toth was a mistake as he threw out over 52 percent of the runners that tried to steal on him.

This spring, Toth led the Pioneers on offense as well as defense. He led Marietta and the Ohio Athletic Conference with a .413 batting average and 20 doubles. Toth was second on the team with 69 base hits and 40 runs batted in.

The Pioneers finished the season with a 32-14 overall record. Marietta won the OAC regular-season championship for the third straight year with a 15-3 league mark. The Pioneers reached the NCAA Mideast Regional championship game before falling to Manchester University.
