Kicking Camp returns to PHS

PARKERSBURG -With one camp in the books, another is on the horizon for former Parkersburg High School standout Tyler Warner, who is overseeing the Athletes in Action Kicking Camp scheduled for Saturday at Stadium Field.

Pending the construction taking place at Stadium Field, the location could change to Parkersburg South’s Erickson All-Sports Facility.

“We plan on the camp being at Parkersburg High School, but because of the demolition crews it might be moved to South,” said Warner, who spent four seasons kicking for Marshall University.

Several of the same faces who worked with Warner at his camp last week in Xenia, Ohio, will arrive in Parkersburg for Friday’s Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A on Grand Central Avenue. From 5:30-8 p.m., all proceeds will benefit the Athletes in Action football ministry which began last September.

Kickers who will be on hand to sign autographs include Parkersburg natives Michael Molinari (West Virginia University) and Cody Nutter (West Virginia University), along with Virginia Tech’s Justin Myer, Pittsburgh’s Lucas Briggs and North Carolina State long-snapper Corey Tedder.

“Athletes in Action has a basketball ministry, a cycling ministry, and a track and field ministry – our football ministry is looking to get up and running,” Warner said. “It’s difficult, but being able to have a fundraiser is huge.”

The following day, campers will begin registering between 9-9:45 a.m. Walk-ups are encouraged.

A two-hour instructional session beginning at 10 a.m. will be followed by lunch, which will be provided for. After a kicking exhibition by staff members, the day will continue with additional instruction.

Also slated to lend their expertise are Liberty punter Grant Bowden, two-time All-American Matt Spitz of Capital, Northwestern’s Amado Villarreal and Kentucky’s Brian Johnson. Johnson is a native of Ripley.

“All these guys are strong Christians and want to share their story,” Warner said. “They are using the platform of sport and don’t want to waste that.”
