PHS favored at Erickson meet

PARKERSBURG – The field is set for tonight’s Erickson All-Sports Facility/Camden Clark Medical Center Invitational and the hosts Patriots will have their work cut out for them if they hope to send their seniors off with a pair of victories.

“This may be the toughest field we’ve had in quite some time,” explained boys head coach Steve Fox. “I saw some improvement in areas at the Two Rivers Athletic Conference meet, but overall we did not perform as well as I’d hope.”

The Patriots finished second in the boys competition at the TRAC and followed that up with a fourth place effort at the Fenton Relays on Tuesday. The girls of head coach Shawn Shockey will enter their final home meet of the season off of a third place finish at the Fenton Relays.

“Parkersburg will be the toughest team there,” continued Fox. “They seem to be able to score points in a lot of areas and their depth has been good for them all season.”

The Big Reds swept the team, and overall, titles at the Fenton Relays, capturing the girls crown via a three-point, 96-93, decision over the host Yellowjackets and then winning by a nine-point margin over runner-up Doddridge County in the boys division.

Williamstown will again be in the field for the 4:30 p.m. start in field events while the remainder of the 13-team field includes Ritchie County, Wirt County, Tucker County, Marietta, Liberty (Harrison), Ripley, Woodrow Wilson, Lincoln, Parkersburg Catholic at Cabell Midland (girls only).

Running events begin at 5 p.m. in the two session meet. During the break at the conclusion of the 400 meter dash, the Patriots will recognize their seniors and also give a tribute to former-Parkersburg South athlete Carl Travis-a member of the U.S. Navy.

“He (Travis) ran track and cross country and wrestled at South,” added the coach. “He was in (Parkersburg) on leave and they found his body between two barges.”

On the track, the quartet of Lacey Cale, Demi DeGraef, Kasey Williams and Kristin Wilson will look to lower their time of 1 minute, 49.41 seconds in the 4 by 200 meter relay posted at the Fenton Relays while Dylan Rippeto, Tim Ferguson and Stoney Nolan will attempt to give the hosts a sweep of the top three spots in the discus.

Other top individuals to keep an eye out for includes Williamstown’s Andrea Chidester, Lincoln Postlewaite, Madelin Gardner, Evan Fowler, Mitchell Goertler and Evan Smith; Parkersburg’s Sarah Bever, Chandler Hamilton, Kaylee Williams, Evan Rhodes, Landon Miller and Rachel Morris; Ritchie County’s Jessie Hilvers, Johnny Hogue and Amanda Davis; Marietta’s Mitchell Grose, Will Cogswell and Caleb Hall; Wirt County’s Logan Kerby; and Ripley’s Ali Cunningham and Antonio Jones.
