17 are set for induction into MOV Softball Hall of Fame
Mike Allen, Doug Stanley, Patty Cleveland and Rick and Gary Delaney head a group of 17 who will be inducted into the Mid Ohio Valley Softball Hall of Fame at its induction ceremony on April 19 at Pike Street Lanes.
A social will be conducted at 5:30 with dinner at 6 p.m. and the induction ceremony at 7 p.m.
- Mike Allen: The premier player in West Virginia during his career, he is considered to be one of the Mountain State’s all-time softball greats.
Allen possessed every talent -hitting for average and power, possessing blazing speed and played outstanding defense.
He played for such teams as Eagles Arie 2307, Tyler Trucking and also played for the Dupont team that is being recognized by the Hall of Fame. Allen was a key member of teams that claimed state, national and world championships.
- Doug Stanley: The Williamstown native was considered one of the best athletes to ever come out of the Mid Ohio Valley.
He played football at West Virginia University and baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He played for such teams as Jimbo’s, Harlow Lime, IVS and Time Out Bar and was a smooth-fielding shortstop who was courted by the legendary Richard Howard of what is considered to be the best softball team of all time, Howards Furniture of Denver, N.C.
- Patty Cleveland: The Marietta native was a fireballing pitcher for the legendary Hadley Funeral Home.
- Rick and Gary Delaney: The Parkersburg natives were long-time softball umpires who formed one of the state’s most-recognized and sought-after crews.
Thos being inducted into the Hall of Fame are divided into categories. Stanley, Cleveland and Dick Spindler are part of the Legends group. Allen, Tim Roush, Scott Lewis, Larry Childers, Kim Montgomery, Amos Curry and Leland Gault are being inducted as Players. Mike Baker and Larry Harmon were selected as manager/coaches with the Delaneys being honored for their umpiring.
The Kompak Stores will be inducted under the Sponsor category with Jim Vandergrift and Ron Seldomridge earning Special Recognition for their years of service. The 1996-1997 Dupont team that claimed the national title also will be honored.
