Local swimmers make big splash

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -Several points are for the taking as the W.Va. state swim meet enters its final sessions today at West Virginia University’s Natatorium.

Consolation and final heats for the boys begins at 8:30 a.m., while the consolation and final heats for the girls are set for a 4:30 p.m. start.

In Thursday’s preliminaries, Parkersburg’s Sean Snider finished second in the 500 freestyle (5:05.88) and third in the 200 freestyle (1:50.04). Teammate Preston Padden placed second in the 100 freestyle (48.47) and fourth in the 50 freestyle (22.51).

Parkersburg South’s best showing occurred with Garrett Fink, who was seventh in the 200 freestyle (1:57.12). Rounding out the Patriots’ efforts in the boys division were Garrett DePergola, who was 10th in the 200 individual medley (2:15.76); Joe Miller, who was 11th in both the 200 freestyle (1:58.55) and 500 freestyle (5:26.36); and Kinzie Bailey placing 12th in the 500 freestyle (5:28.13).

In the relays, Parkersburg’s Snider, Nic Cheuvront, Peyton Hughes and Padden were fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:33.48), while the same foursome took sixth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:31.49). Parkersburg South’s 400 freestyle relay of Corey Johnson, Bailey, Miller and Fink hit the wall with the eighth fastest time (3:37.78).

On the girls side, Parkersburg had a profitable afternoon beginning with Claire Collette placing fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:06.51) and eighth in the 500 freestyle (5:43.51). Teammate Jen Standley placed eighth in the 100 freestyle (58.29).

Ninth-place showings went to the Big Reds’ Hannah Wareheim in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.57) and Alexa Standley in the 50 freestyle (26.59).

Also qualifying for the consolation heats were Parkersburg South’s Emily Gersper, who was 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.66); along with Parkersburg’s Sarah Snider, who was 12th in the 200 freestyle (2:11.65). Wareheim touched the wall with the 10th fastest time in the 500 freestyle (5:49.61).

On the relay front, South’s 200 freestyle relay of Rachel Kirk, Gersper, Ryan Hesselrode and Anna Pasternak took 12th in a time of 1:53.90.

PHS advanced three relays to today’s finals with the 200 medley relay of Collette, Wareheim, Alexa Standley and Tara Foster taking sixth (2:00.44); the 200 freestyle relay of Jen Standley, Foster, Lacey Dulaney and Alexa Standley taking fourth (1:46.94); and the 400 freestyle relay of Jen Standley, Snider, Dulaney and Collette taking fifth (3:59.86).
