Braxton feels wrath of Yellowjacket buzzsaw

WILLIAMSTOWN – Williamstown did what all home teams are supposed to do on senior night – and that’s win, which the Yellowjacket girl cagers did convincingly.

In the LKC fifth-place game, the No. 12-ranked Class A Yellowjackets started strong and were in control the whole way in bashing Braxton County, 74-36.

The ‘Jackets, now 10-8, scored the game’s first 14 points to lead 17-4 after one quarter, stretched that advantage to 43-10 at the half with an 11-0 blitz in the final minute plus and was ahead by as much as 38 in the third period en route to a victory over the Eagles, now 13-7.

”I think we’re starting to play right at the right time,” said veteran Williamstown head coach Fred Sauro.

The Yellowjackets’ potent blend of a pressure defense and an attack, up-tempo offense proved fatal for Braxton, which didn’t help itself either by, as the saying goes, ”not being able to buy a basket” in the early going to fall behind 14-0 in the first five minutes.

Williamstown began the second stanza like it did the first, turning a 12-0 opening spurt into a 25-point bulge, 29-4, just 2:20 in and then Kenzie Smith spearheaded the 11-0 surge in the last minute with the first nine points as the ‘Jacket press took over the game completely in the final four minutes of the half.

The second half was about even, but the real damage had already been done with Braxton unable to effectively recover at all.

The seven Williamstown seniors, honored before the game, were Jessie Kerns, Smith, Carley Ellison, Kathleen Cornell, Sami Rea, Brooke Cieslewski and Lauren Amos.

Smith led the ‘Jackets with 17 points, 14 coming in the first half, followed by Cieslewski with 16, 12 coming on four treys, Cornell with 14, Kerns with 10 and Ellison with seven.

For Braxton, Hunter Sodaro was the Eagles’ lone double-digit point-producer with 16.

Williamstown returns to its homecourt today, facing Man at 5:45 p.m., before the Yellowjacket boys host Wood County Christian at 7:30 p.m.
