Big Reds ‘Ward’ off Flying Eagles, 48-44

PARKERSBURG – Three Big Red players scored in double-figures, including Megan Morrison who scored all 10 of her points in the fourth quarter during a 15-6 Parkersburg run -including two free-throws with 9.6 seconds left – to seal a comeback win for the Big Reds at Memorial Fieldhouse Tuesday night, beating visiting Woodrow Wilson 48-44.

The game started off on a high note for the Big Reds as a lane violation on the tip-off gave PHS the ball out of bounds to begin the game.

The Big Reds would fail to capitalize on two chances and the Flying Eagles would strike first blood with a jumper by Kavita Francois 53 seconds into the game.

Imani Ward scored the first five points for the Big Reds and Morrison would put the Big Reds in front for the first time at 7-5 with 4 minutes left in the first quarter.

The Big Reds entered the second period down by one and went on a 5-2 run to take the lead back at 20-18 with five minutes left only to relinquish it a minute later on a three-point play by Woodrow Wilson’s Breanna Thompson.

The Big Reds would only score two more points in the quarter as Woodrow Wilson went on eight of the next 10 to take a four- point lead into the locker room, 26-22.

The Flying Eagles picked up right where they left off after halftime going a second 8-2 run to lengthen the lead to 12 at 36-24 but the Big Reds battled back with a run of their own starting at 2:04 in the third going on a 9-2 streak to shrink the deficit down to five heading into the final period.

The final period of play began with neither team able to hit a shot for a minute and a half until Morrison was fouled and sank two free throws to pull within three points. Following a timeout by Woodrow Wilson, the Big Reds would score 15 of the next 21 points including a technical foul free-throw made by Ward with 44 seconds left and the two game-sealers by Morrison with under ten seconds left.

Joining Morrison in double-figures on the night was Haley Ackerman with 10 and Ward who registered a double-double with a team leading 13 points and 13 rebounds. Ward also recorded four blocked shots on the night.

Leading the way for the Flying Eagles was Kativa Francois, who scored 16 points.

The Big Reds will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to Capital today.
