Fort Frye stuns rival Waterford, 22-20
BEVERLY — Fort Frye High was a different team in the second half.
Trailing 14-0 at the intermission, the Cadets rallied to defeat visiting Waterford High, 22-20, in prep football action Friday night.
“When we ran the ball in the first half, we just had too many mistakes,” said FFHS head coach Eric Huck. “We came out and played our game in the second half. I just wish we could play a full game against them.”
Fort (3-0) scored 22 unanswered points after the break, capped by Tyler Fisher’s 89-yard touchdown run and Tate Engle’s two-point conversion run with 1:51 left in the fourth quarter.
The 5-foot-10, 162-pound Fisher finished the contest with a game-high 179 rushing yards on 11 carries and two TDs.
“Fisher is a big play guy, and he has speed,” Huck said.
Fisher also had a three-yard TD run in the third quarter, and teammate Evan Schob a six-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter.
FFHS sophomore Brian Adkins added 99 yards on 16 carries and had one two-point conversion run. Engle completed 3 of nine throws for 49 yards.
Defensively, Dylan Hart had a team-high seven tackles for the Cadets. Brady Schilling and Schob each had an interception, while Isiah Jones recovered a fumble.
Eric McCutcheon-coached Waterford (2-1) was led by senior Braden Bellville, who rushed for 119 yards on 24 carries and one touchdown. Quarterback Peyten Stephens completed 11 of 21 throws for 191 yards and one TD of 20 yards to Zane Heiss. Heiss finished with four receptions for 125 yards, and also threw a 12-yard TD pass to Rhys Thatcher. Thatcher had three catches for 40 yards.
Defensively for the Wildcats, Nick Fouss, Heiss, and Thatcher each recovered a fumble.
Waterford took the opening kickoff and march 74 yards on five plays. Bellville’s 15-yard touchdown run on an outside sweep-left gave the Cats a 6-0 advantage.
Late in the second quarter, WHS stretched its lead to 14-0 when Heiss hooked up with Thatcher and then Stephens ran for the two-point conversion.
At halftime, Waterford led 14-0.
Fort Frye received the second half kickoff and drove to the WHS 2, where Fisher ran it in. Adkins then ran for the two-point conversion to cut it to 14-8.
Early in the fourth quarter, Schob ran seven yards to paydirt to tie the game at 14-all.
Late in the period, Fort had the ball on its own 11 and it was third and seven. Fisher took the handoff from Engle, went left, and raced 89 yards down the left sideline to give the Cadets the advantage. Engle’s two-point conversion run made it 22-14.
“We were having a hard time running at Stephens over there on the right side,” Huck said. “So, I wasn’t giving the ball much to Fisher. But we were working the other guys to death, so we gave it to him, and he made the best of it.”
But Waterford came back and with 49 seconds left in the game, Stephens passed 20 yards to Heiss for a TD. But on the two-point conversion attempt by Stephens, the Wildcat QB came up short, according to the ref, of the goal line.
