I believe part of the problem is how an "amateur" is defined around the world. I agree completely that our Olympic team should be made up of true amateurs. When the US basketball team started using pros and the "dream team" was beaten I liked it. Not because Americans lost, but if the pros lose there's no excuse to not use amateurs.

The modern olympics are a joke. The olympics used to be for amateurs only. Today you have many MLB, NBA etc. players competing against the young amateurs. Jim Thorpe lost his medals (later reinstated [long after his death]) because he accepted a few dollars to play baseball. I would like to see it returned to amateurs only but I doube it will happen. Today everything is how much money can be made.
