Please bring the comments back.

I would be the first to admit that a few short months ago the comments section of this site was troll central but there were a lot of legitimate posters as well, many of whom have very few outlets for their ideas or opinions of the articles and polls to get out to the community. Isn't it an over reaction to a minor problem to keep the comment section gone for this long?

Well its been 2 weeks since the paywall has taken effect and 2 months since the comments were removed. What a snoozefest this place has become, its not worth the time to read the paper without the public feedback so it looks like I will be canceling my sub and I don't believe I will be purchasing from the news stand either. In the words of the late Paul Harvey, "Good day".

The Parkersburg News& Sentinel is following what happened with the Charleston Gazette and Charleston Daily Mail. Trolls prompted the removal of comments as well as contributed to the lack of increased readership thus causing the paywall.

It would have been easy enough to ban their IP address, unless their software is so incredibly outdated (or their I.T. is incompetent). They could also have had whoever is in charge of managing/running the web page "approve" comments, or at a minimum delete the "bad" ones, it's not like there were so many comments every day that they couldn't mange the volume.

Doesn't matter now, with them putting the paper behind a paywall (Wednesday?).

I wonder if they really think putting the web page behind a paywall will increase their subscriptions. One would think that it would drive down traffic, and make it more difficult to sell web page advertising with less traffic.

Libelous statements maybe, but hard to prove intent. With the new paid subscription policy coming it will be a long shot if these forums even exist. Time will tell. Countdown to the last of Random thoughts.

The comment boards had become dominated by a few poster. Those few posters were posting mostly negative and slanderous comments. The N&S probably decided to close the boards down before they became involved in lawsuits because of slanderous comments posted.

mythravere, The same poster that you mentioned also tried the same tricks at the Times site and after (to my best count) 17 screen names getting banned they finally gave up and went away. In my opinion it wasn't the bans that made him stop, it was the most of the other posters agreeing to ignore that person.

Is there any correlation between having the opportunity to comment on articles avaiabile to readers and increased readership? I believe comments make the paper more interesting to read. A free press is a better press.

Return of comments on general articles and polls would be nice. The Times still allows them and the wold still rotates every day. We have the ability to recognize demeaning activities and how to counter them. The military used to punish all for the crimes of the individual and the individual would suffer from the group. Didn't like being punished for others' mistakes then and don't now. Many articles need to be discussed and not stretched out over weeks of letters to the editor. Suppose the only alternative is to post every headline here in the forum and do it here.

There was one poster who incessantly riled up the other commenters. He would be banned but would then return under another name and start over again.

I think the News and Sentinel team took the only means available to them to put a stop to his foolishness.

would suspect there is also the reason that some of the comments posted were much too truthful for those being commented about and the fact that no business itself will be allowed to be criticized for any reason. the "trolls" while quite bothersome were just the means to silence many.
