Food Stamp (USDA SNAP) Double-Dipping

School is about to start again and the free or reduced lunch program will be in full swing. What most people don't know is that even though a child receives as many as 40 or so free meals per month at school, their parents continue to receive the exact same amount of food stamp benefits. Where I come from, that is called double-dipping.

The article about the EBT mess at Walmart stated that some of those people took 7 carts of food and came back for more. They knew darn well their cards did NOT have that kind of money on them. Now how much do you think 7 grocery carts stuffed to over-flowing, wonder how much that cost? These people give deserving people on snaps a bad name. They are nothing but thieves who take advantage of our wallets - because you just know they won't prosecute and it will come out of our pockets, while they are off happily selling their ill-gotten gains.

There will always be those that take advantage of a system. I would hate to see any child go hungry. Just like our government, they keep taking and spending. We allow them to do this to us. Just like a parent that enables their adult children to spend above their means. The parent that continually bail's them out week or month after month. At least let the child get a decent meal at school, they may not get one at home.

@Aarons.: Free lunch, what would those companies that provide the fixins for mystery meat Monday ever do, free lunch for everyone gimme a BREAK......

The free lunch program originated as the National School Lunch Act of 1946 in response to the poor nutrition of students that led to many young men being denied entrance into the military during WW2. The bill was meant to provide better nutrition for our nations youth so that they would be fit to serve our nation.

Personally, I think with what we spend on schools, lunch should be free to everyone.

Well, well, well, WV has one of the highest poverty rates for children in the nation, this is what we do, we take those recieving reduced/free lunches and make them clean toilets, clean out the grease traps, scrub the floors with toothbrushes, and we`ll pull them out of class to do this, because we all know those little heathens are going to end up like their parents, wont work, on the govt. dole, getting large amounts of corporate(oops)....social program welfare, I mean, why even send them to school at all, shoot once them little buggers get ten years old, it should be off to the coal mines, just like their great-great grand pappy did....

Double-dipping may not be drowning us as much as fraud. Let’s look at some figures.

For a family of four, the maximum allowable benefit is $668/mo., or $167/person/mo.

So recipients have, at most, $167 to feed a kid. I don’t see how anybody could pack a decent lunch for less than $3. Now $167/mo.-($3/lunch * 20 lunches/mo.)=$107/mo. left over to feed that kid all his or her other meals.

Is this too much?

As to fraud, I’ve observed that school administrators, who must determine eligibility, can’t keep up with all the schemes non-qualified families concoct to obtain free school meals.

In my city, which has neither very rich nor very poor neighborhoods, the median household income is close to $80k. It seems like over half the students at the grade school next door to me arrive early for free breakfasts.

Judging by the figures above and my personal observation, outright fraud may be more of a problem than double-dipping.

We sure do not want the wretched poor to have anymore food than they deserve, do we!
