What's a poor person who loves working supposed to do?

...when the Democrats try to make not working pay, while the Republicans try to make working not pay.

Tiredofit said- "I'll bet every one of these socialist libs in here broke one or more of these rules and now want something from those who didn't " Do you click your heels when you stand up? Have you never heard that perfectionism is fatalistic ?

Don't have kids until you can afford them, stay off drugs, show up on time, work hard, leave on time. Keys to success.

While I agree that minimum wage standards can hinder employment for a small segment of society and they do add to the cost as discussed below, I have little doubt that were they abolished in this day and age, there would be companies that abuse employees by paying them a low wage. It can be argued that supply and demand would set the wage but I’m not so sure that would happen.

Saying that, In this day and age, if one is willing to work, shows up on time, is dependable is willing to seek out and participate in ongoing educational opportunities, they will make more than minimum wage regardless of the industry they are in.

Take a look at north Dakota. Employment up 36%. Wages up more than 50% across all sectors. No need for minimum wage everyone is working that wants to at good paying jobs, how's it possible? Oil and gas. Maybe if the govt would get out of the way we could get back to work. Oh that's right global Warming.

Where does that extra money come from? Its another tax on working folks. China has enough of our money.

That last sentence should read, "I don’t like the current system, in which profits rise greatly and non-workers get more and more benefits, but wages of honest workers stay about the same."

I admit to bias here. I'm biased in favor of people who aren't afraid of honest work and would prefer to earn their own way.

I want such people to have a better deal. I don’t like the current system, in which profits rise greatly and non-workers get more and more benefits, wages of honest workers stay about the same.

“Hence fewer jobs, and everyone pays a higher price.”

Do you have any evidence that fewer jobs overall would result? Wouldn’t the increased spending by the workers generate more economic activity and more jobs?

Market forces are the fairest and best way to run an economy. Govt control or Robber Barons are equally guilty of distorting the market

Tiredofit

There should be NO minimum wage. The market should decide the prevailing wage. When Govt gets involved you have a distortion of the market, this is what gave us the housing bust.

You miss the point once again. Take walmart for instance. The employees also may shop there. If they raise the wage to 20 dollars per hour, the employees would have much more cash to spend that is true. However, to maintain the profit margin, Walmart would have to raise prices and cut jobs. Hence fewer jobs, and everyone pays a higher price. Redistributive socialism Harry.

There is currently redistribution from the taxpayer to the consumer.

I'd like to see government benefits cut and wages increased.

harryanderson

Under the current system, where many low-wage employees rely on government benefits, the so-called rich taxpayer subsidizes these jobs. I say the consumers of the goods and services these employees produce should pick up the tab.

And if there is no demand, maybe there should be no supply.
