Foreign contributions and US Elections

Now that it's been shown by Newsweek, that even ,then presidential nominee, Barak Obama campaign had taken donations from foreign sources, proving that neither political party is totally innocent on this topic. How should the govt proceed to make sure that non-US entities do not have too much sway over who we choose to govern us?
