Marilyn: Considering the fact that your science comments are typically accurate, I was surprised when you stated that children may be more likely to become myopic if they do a lot of reading. (September 9, 2012) Can you provide references for this conclusion? I find it hard to believe, especially considering the fact that even avid young readers must use their eyes much of the time for distance viewing. Why would they then lose the ability to see clearly at a distance?
I know the message wasn't welcome news, but it's almost certainly correct. My remarks are common knowledge among professionals. Numerous studies have been done. Here's an example.
