PARKERSBURG - Ritchie County first-year head volleyball coach Matt Carpenter's squad pulled off a sweep here Thursday night as the Rebels handed host Parkersburg Catholic a 25-9 and 25-15 setback while also posting a 25-23 and 25-13 triumph versus Ravenswood.
The Rebels, who lost a pair of tough matches at home on Wednesday to Tyler Consolidated and Williamstown, received match-highs of 14 points, five aces and eight kills from Kenna DeLancey against the Crusaderettes. Rebel teammate Becca Sullivan posted a match-high 15 assists while Leah Kuhn and Jessie Bryson had five downed spikes apiece.
Against now 0-2 Ravenswood, the Rebels were led by Vanessa Tallman's match-high eight tallies from the service line. DeLancey's eight downed spikes and Sullivan's nine assists were also match-highs.
Parkersburg Catholic's Kimberly Samolitis leaps in an attempt to block a volley by Ritchie's Becca Sullivan.
Ritchie's Jessie Bryson readies a spike at Parkersburg Catholic's Audrey Eisenmann during their match Thursday.
PCHS head coach Ashley Price's team, who like Ravenswood was just opening its season, had a relatively easy 25-18 first set win versus the Red Devils of head man Gary Braham before ending the match in style with a 27-25 victory in set two. As it turned out, birthday girl Reily Sturm, who turned 16 on Thursday, was key in the Crusaderettes' victory as she put down the final two kills of the match with Audrey Eisenmann toeing the service line.
Parkersburg Catholic, which returns to action with Tyler Consolidated on Tuesday at St. Marys, appeared to be in solid shape with a 15-10 lead in set two versus Ravenswood after a Sturm kill from an Abby Witucky assist. However, Ariana Kennedy served three straight aces following a sideout and a Katie Mellinger downed spike squared it at 15.
Despite having a 22-21 cushion after an Erica Green service point, the Red Devils couldn't hold the lead and suffered the setback even though they had a shot at set point with a 24-23 advantage following Bayli Manns' kill with Skyler Mace serving.
Sturm finished with 11 points, seven kills and five aces against Ravenswood. Witucky and Meredith Koerber combined for 13 assists and Kimberly Samolitis chipped in three kills and four blocks.
Red Devil Lauren Hoff contributed four points, a trio of aces and assists as well as four kills and a block versus PCHS.
