PARKERSBURG - In an effort to not only raise money for disaster relief and give families something different to do together, the Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is teaming up with Classic Plastics Toy Store for an event day.
The Classic Plastics Toy and Comic Expo will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 13 at South Parkersburg Baptist Church, 1655 Blizzard Drive in south Parkersburg, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross disaster relief. The event is $2 per person to enter, free for children 10 years and younger.
"It seems that everyone watches the comic book movies that are now blockbusters and some people read the comic books, it would be something fun for families to do together," said Todd Wines, regional disaster services program manager for the Red Cross in Parkersburg.
Wines said he and Tony Workman, owner of Classic Plastics Toy Store at Rinky Dinks Flea Market in Marietta, are friends and decided to do join together for the expo.
"Todd approached me with the idea and I loved it," said Workman.
The event will not only be filled with comic book and superhero items, but also Hot Wheels, Star Wars, W.Va. Ghost Busters and more.
"There will be a little bit of everything for kids and adults," Workman said.
All funds raised through the cover charge will go to the local Red Cross disaster relief services, which includes financial assistance for those who lose their homes and belongings to fire and flooding as well as equipment volunteers will need in the event of a disaster.
"This is a new, different thing we are trying and hope people will enjoy it," Wines said.
Wines added the Red Cross is hoping to raise as much as $2,000 with this event.
"But, we are being realistic and really just hope people come and have fun," he said.
No matter the amount raised, Wines and Workman said they plan to make the expo an annual event.
"We figured we could try this and hope to make it an annual event," Wines added.
