Ovid Glenn ‘Tug’ Bennett

Ovid Glenn "Tug" Bennett, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2014, at his home in Orem, Utah.

He was born on April 6, 1924, in Parkersburg, to Merle Elaine Knick and Jessie Glenn Bennett. He was the oldest of 10 children.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Virginia May Rodman Bennett; grandson, Jacob Lee Bennett; brother, Jim Bennett; and sisters, Patsy Carpenter, Mary Nern and Dianna Cremeans.

Tug was a happy and positive person who never met a stranger and saw the good in everyone. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints attending Orem UT 7th Ward. Tug graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1942 where he excelled in all sports, especially baseball and basketball. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and took his children camping and water skiing. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 serving in World War II as an Electricians Mate First Class on the USS Shelton, which was sunk after being torpedoed close to Morotai Island. Tug was instrumental in the rescue of many injured comrades and received several medals and awards for his remarkable service. After the war, he worked as an Electrician, Maintenance Superintendent and Building Inspector.

Tug is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Bennett; sisters, Ruth Bennett, Shirley Cottrill, Lynda MacDonald and Laura McDougle of West Virginia; brother, Jerry Bennett of Florida; children, David Bennett of Illinois, Doug Bennett of Oregon, Lisa Bennett Pinkard (James) of West Virginia and Jill Larsen (Garrett) of Utah; stepchildren; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday at the LDS Church located at 365 S. 900 E. in Orem, Utah. A viewing will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. with services to follow at 11 a.m.
