John R. Carter, 78, of Belpre, died July 18, 2014, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born Oct. 26, 1935, in Nitro, W.Va., to the late Andrew and Ethel (Roberts) Carter.
John enjoyed hunting, fishing and his being involved at his church, Souls Refuge, where he was a "Pillar" and a lifetime member.
He is survived by two sons, Matt Carter (Lana) of Atlanta, Ga., and Phillip Carter (Lacy) of Virginia; two daughters, Amy Bell (Rick) of Belleville, W.Va., and Julie Fleeman (Chris) of Marietta; nine grandchildren; two great-grandsons; two brothers; and two sisters.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Melanie Lee Carter.
Memorial contributions in John's name may be made to the American Cancer Society and/or Souls Refuge Church.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre, with Pastor John Longfellow officiating. Burial will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery in Belpre. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
