Jerrold V. Murphy Sr.

Jerrold Vaughn "Jerry" Murphy Sr., 75, of Vienna, passed away June 27, 2014, at the Cleveland Clinic.

He was born in Swandale, W.Va., on Oct. 13, 1938, son of the late Colonel Francis and Dorothy Barbara Westfall Murphy.

Jerry had worked for Erie Insurance for 32 years and served as branch manager and Vice President, LUTC, CPCU. He was past president of the following organizations: Parkersburg Jaycees, JCI Senator, Life Underwriters, Literacy Volunteers of the Mid-Ohio Valley, WV Insurance Federation, Promen'aires Square Dance Club, Pioneer Antique Auto Club, Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad Co-Op, and was also a member of Toastmasters, the Parkersburg Homecoming Committee, the Rock & Gem Club, the Mountwood Park Board, PHS Band Boosters, and Packmaster of Pack 21. He had a passion for collecting and tinkering with antique cars and has enjoyed many activities including running and he was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Surviving Jerry are his wife of 54 years, Marilyn "Kay" Watkins Murphy; sons, Jerrold V. Murphy Jr. (Tracy) of Parkersburg and John Edward Murphy (Lori) of Palmyra, Pa.; daughter, JoAnna Lynne Mullins (Brian) of Alexandrea, Va.; five grandchildren, Christopher Johnston, Rachel Murphy, Marissa Murphy, Preston Murphy and Ashley Murphy; step grandchildren, Isacc Pepper, William Mullins (Sarah), Joshua Mullins, Richard Mullins and Joseph Mullins; step great-grandson, William Alexander; and sister, Nancy Ruth Murphy of Naples, Fla.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his brother, Charles L. Murphy.

The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jerry's memory to the Literacy Volunteers of the Mid-Ohio Valley, 3100 Emerson Ave., Parkersburg, WV 26104.
