Carl Robert (Bob) Cumberledge, 86, of Bluffton, S.C., passed away June 20, 2014, at home, following an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 19, 1927, in Wood County, W.Va. Bob was the son of the late Carl E. and Violet Cumberledge of Parkersburg.
Survivors include his brother, John D. Cumberledge, Ravenswood, W.Va.; sons, Michael K. Cumberledge, Cross Lanes, W.Va., and Mark Cumberledge, Bluffton, S.C.; and daughter, Rebekah Cumberledge Hesson, Morgantown, W.Va. He was blessed to have 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his spouse, Kathleen K. (Kitty) Cumberledge. They were married April 16, 1945, and were married for 64 years before her death in 2009. He was also preceded in death by two children; son, Robert L. Cumberledge, and daughter, Linda K. Cumberledge.
Bob graduated from Parkersburg High School and then served his country in the Coast Guard during World War II. During his time with the Coast Guard, he developed a love for boxing and participated in several Golden Glove tournaments after the war. He went to work as a carpenter for his father-in-law and soon went into business for himself as a general contractor. He established himself as a quality builder and his houses can still be found in the neighborhoods and housing developments around the Parkersburg area. His building career spanned over 40 years before his retirement to South Carolina. Bob was a Christian and was most recently a member of Bible Baptist Church of Hilton Head, S.C. He returned from South Carolina to Parkersburg to be buried at Sunset Memorial Gardens, beside his loving wife, Kathleen.
