PARKERSBURG - The Camden Clark Medical Center's Health and Wellness Center, formerly the Family Fitness Center, recently celebrated 25 years of business in the Mid-Ohio Valley.
Originally opening June 5, 1989, as a facility for Camden Clark employees, the Family Fitness Center opened its doors to the public soon after and became "the fitness center of the Mid-Ohio Valley," according to Louie Haer, director.
As of Jan. 1, the facility became the Camden Clark Health and Wellness Center, no longer a separate entity, but a department of the medical center.

According to Haer, the fitness center has evolved through the years into a medically based fitness center where members can benefit from expert guidance on exercise, nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits. Every new and existing membership includes access to a personalized health risk assessment by a fitness specialist and a 12-week exercise prescription.
The Health and Wellness Center provides many individual needs for its members, including rehabilitation, physical therapy or for those with an ongoing medical condition.
According to Haer, the benefits of choosing a medically based fitness center are medical oversight, clinical integration and a qualified staff.
Dr. Terry Capel, medical director, meets with Haer on a monthly basis and provides medical oversight on all medicines, policies and equipment utilized with members of the center. As a department of the medical center, it looks to add clinical integration with other departments, including cardiac rehabilitation, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, diabetic patients, and oncology patients.
The Camden Clark Health and Wellness Center has qualified staff with essential degrees and certifications to ensure the best quality health care is provided to all who use it, center officials said.
"We are currently working on the next phase of the plan to have access to dietitians to ensure that members are benefitting from the best nutritional choices as well," Haer said. "After 25 years, we are looking into the future by offering clinical outpatient service lines, which is the way health care is going."
