VIENNA - Officials have released the name of the man who died Friday when his motorcycle struck another vehicle on Rosemar Road while he was fleeing from police.
Wood County Chief Deputy Shawn Graham identified the rider of the 1993 Kawasaki as Kendrick Leshaun Baker, 45, of Parkersburg.
Baker died as a result of his injuries in the accident which occurred about 7:18 p.m. Friday. Baker was operating his motorcycle at a high rate of speed westbound on Rosemar Road with police in pursuit when the accident occurred.
Graham said Baker had already passed several cars on Rosemar Road by going into the opposite lane when he attempted to pass another vehicle in a right-hand turn between Orchard Avenue and Briscoe Road and struck the side of an oncoming truck driven by Todd Echard of Boaz.
The accident remained under investigation Saturday by the Wood County Crash Team. Graham said officials are not certain why Baker tried to flee, but one factor may have been a warrant that had been issued for his arrest on a driving under suspension charge.
Graham said investigators also recovered a "significant" amount of marijuana from a backpack Baker was wearing at the time of the accident.
"Irregardless of his reasons, our thoughts go out to his family," Graham said Saturday.
