PARKERSBURG - A Wirt County man has been indicted by the Wood County Grand Jury and charged with drunken driving causing the death of his 7-year-old son and injury of his 6-year-old son.
The indictment naming Zachary Lee Taylor, 29, 215 Central Ave., Elizabeth, was recently unsealed revealing he was charged from the March 10 accident on Butcher Bend Road where Landon Taylor was killed and Lance Taylor was injured.
The elder Taylor was indicted on charges of driving under the influence causing death, driving with a blood-alcohol content of .08 or greater causing death, DUI causing bodily injury and blood alcohol content of .08 or greater causing bodily injury.
According to police reports, Taylor was traveling west on Wood County 14/4 in a Dodge Nitro at an unknown rate of speed, climbing the hill from the 4-H Fairgrounds area. When the road curved to the left on the side of the mountain, Taylor's Nitro exited the road, hitting the gravel berm to the right, police said.
Police said Taylor accelerated off of the roadway and the passenger side of his car hit a tree, stripping the tree of its bark in the impact location. The vehicle then went airborne for approximately 20 feet before it struck a tree head-on, police said. The tree was about 12 feet off of the road and was about half of the width of the vehicle at the point of impact, police said. Reports said the vehicle came to rest about 75 feet from the road.
Landon Taylor was taken by helicopter to Charleston Area Medical Center from the accident scene, police said, and Zachary Taylor and Lance Taylor were taken to Camden Clark Medical Center by ambulance.
