Stephen Franklin Hedrick

Stephen Franklin Hedrick, 79, of Marietta, Ohio, died peacefully on May 16, 2014, at home.

He was born on Nov. 3, 1934, to Louise and Andrew Hedrick in Marietta, Ohio.

Steve married the love of his life, Patricia "Big Red" McCullick on Aug. 7, 1959. Steve's family included Tammie (Mark) Johnson, Steve "Doug" (Missy) Hedrick and Kim Hedrick. He has five grandchildren, Tyler and Derek Johnson and Zachary and Tifani and Jonathan Hedrick; and one step-grandson, Michael Francis. He has a sister, Alice Hall (Norm) of Las Vegas.

He was a 1952 graduate of Marietta High School. He served in the United States Air Force and enjoyed his time in France. He worked from the time he was 8 years old. He purchased his first lawnmower making weekly payments to Mr. Bush. He also worked at his uncle's lumber yard, Broughtons Restaurant and various garages. He was a delivery milkman for the Broughtons Food Company and he won several awards. He was the founder and co-owner of Pioneer City Auto Parts.

He was a supporter of the local volunteer fire departments. Often, he would supply wrecked cars for training purposes. He also supported local children's events such as Gold Star Lodge 188's Cops for Kids, a program that makes it possible for deputies to take needy children Christmas shopping. He also donated bicycles to the Marietta Police Department's annual police picnic and Washington County Sheriff's Department's fair events.

In his younger days, Steve raced locally. His son, Doug, and grandson, Jonnie, also raced locally. He was an avid NASCAR fan. His favorite NASCAR drivers were Bill Elliott, Junior Johnson, Ryan Newman, Chase Elliott and the up-and-coming Cale Conley.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; his favorite mother-in-law, Frances McCullick; and grandson, Zachary.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike St., Marietta, OH 45750. Burial to follow at East Lawn Memorial Park with full military honors. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank Jamie, Josh, Ruthie, Carrie, Dr. Dennis and Dr. Cawley from Hospice for their help and guidance.

The family would also like to thank Steve's medical team, Dr. Tappel, Joan and Crystal, Dr. Hershey, Dr. Benhke, Dr. Louden and Dr. Moussa.

The family requests that donations be made in Steve's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, Hospice, Gold Star Lodge Cops and Kids program, Reno's Fire Department and Marietta Police Department's Children's picnic.
