Parkersburg News and Sentinel

Gary Alan Hunt, 60, of Ravenswood, W.Va., passed away on May 13, 2014, at CAMC Memorial, surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 17, 1953, in Morgantown, W.Va., the son of Rosemary C. (Hines) and the late Earl "Tinker" Hunt.

He married his high school sweetheart, Debi Ann Bentine, Aug. 18, 1973. "Like peanut butter and jelly," they've been inseparable ever since.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, "Papaw" worked tirelessly to make sure his home and community were the best place to grow up for his three boys - Brad, Scott and Jared - and beloved grandchildren, Annie and Drew.

He graduated from Ravenswood High School in 1971. A talented athlete, he lettered in all three varsity sports. A gifted pitcher with a red-hot fastball, he was his alma mater's first All-State Baseball honoree.

Drafted after high school by the Chicago Cubs, he played at the college level for Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz., and later for Marshall University, where he graduated with degrees in health and safety and education.

Rather than play Major League ball, he wanted to return to his hometown to raise a family. He worked for a time at Ravenswood Aluminum before setting off into business for himself, founding Gary's Beverage & Video (or just "Gary's" as it was known across town) in 1993.

Elected to Ravenswood City Council in 2005, he later gave up his seat to accept a job as the city's Maintenance Supervisor in 2009. He took great pride in doing his part to spruce up the town.

He is survived by his mother, Rosemary of Ravenswood, W.Va.; his wife of 40 years, Debi, of the home; sons, Brad Hunt of Orlando, Fla., Scott Hunt and wife, Mary Beth, of Ravenswood and Jared Hunt of Ravenswood; grandchildren, Annie and Drew Hunt of Ravenswood; sisters, Diana Moresea and husband, Bob, of Ravenswood and Vanessa Sawyer and husband, Dan, of Caldwell, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Earl "Tinker" Hunt.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Praise Cathedral in Ravenswood, with friend and Pastor Ruth Dale Sergent officiating. A graveside service will follow in Ravenswood Cemetery. Friends may visit the family from 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2014, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests, in Gary's memory, donations be made to RHS Bleacher Fund, c/o Ravenswood High School, 100 Plaza Drive, Ravenswood, WV 26164.

Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, is in charge of arrangements.

Condolences may be expressed to the family at roush94@yahoo.com.
