James Leslie Bembry went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 3, 2014.
He was born on May 7, 1937, in Baker County, Fla., son of the late Rufus James and Alice Bembry.
James was a graduate of Alachua High School in Alachua, Fla., W.Va. Northern Community College and West Liberty State College. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Technical Sergeant, having served 20 years with a tour in Vietnam. He also retired from Ormet Aluminum. He served as an Emergency Medical Technician and treasurer of Middlebourne Emergency Squad for 28 years. He was an assistant and a troop leader with Boy Scouts of America in Virginia and West Virginia for 11 years. He was a member of Arnold's Creek Christian Church, Deep Valley, W.Va., where he faithfully served as a lay minister, elder and deacon for the past 38 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, James T., Rufus H., Carl M. and Albert J. Bembry; two sisters, Isola Franks and Evelyn A. Crawford; and one son, Matthew D. Bembry. James is survived by his loving wife, Shirley McKitrick Bembry, whom he married Oct. 19, 1957, in Middleboure, W.Va.; two sons, Kendrick J. Bembry of Clarksburg, W.Va., and Mark E. Bembry and wife Patsy of Norfolk, Va.; one daughter; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; children, Jessica Bembry Suarez and husband Tony and Janelle, also of Norfolk, Va., Martha Hoyt and husband David of St. Marys, W.Va.; son, Jacob; three great-grandchildren, Kohl, Mykael and Zachary Suarez; and four brothers, Loyd C. (Melba), Loren E. (Lois), Raymond D. and William H. (Clara) Bembry, all of Florida.
The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. today at the Arnold's Creek Christian Church, Deep Valley, with Rev. Lemoyne Horner and Rev. Mark Bembry officiating. Interment in Wilbur Cemetery, Wilbur, W.Va. Military rites will be provided by VFW Post 6327, Sistersville VFW Post 4634, New Martinsville American Legion Post 67, Sistersville American Legion Post 86 Paden City, and American Legion Post 28, New Martinsville.
