John Ellis Chalfant, 85, of Parkersburg, passed away April 25, 2014, at Highland Oaks Health Center, McConnelsville, Ohio.
John was born in Parkersburg on April 8, 1929, a son of the late Boehm Young Chalfant and Helena McLaughlin Chalfant.
He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1948, where he was a member of the proud Big Red Marching Band. John graduated from West Virginia University in 1953, and was attending law school when called to duty in the U.S. Army for four years with service in Korea. Upon returning to Parkersburg after his tour of duty in Korea, John joined his father in the Chalfant Realty Company (selling out the earth). He continued the family business after his father passed away in 1981.
John is survived by several cousins, including Judy Reed (Ed) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Helen W. Lockhart Chalfant on Dec. 2, 2000; his stepmother, Marian McKinley Chalfant Goebel; one sister, Mary Chalfant Brown; and paternal grandparents, Claiborne Ellis and Gertrude Clark Chalfant.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Vaughan Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Sandy Runnion officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
