POINT PLEASANT - David Boice, a former Parkersburg resident, has penned, illustrated and published his first children's book.
"The idea for Rocket Ship Trip came from thinking about what subject areas kids have to learn about. I wanted to make learning more fun, so I decided to write a story about space and put it into a rhyming format," Boice said.
"Rocket Ship Trip" is not his first venture into writing.
David M. Boice, a Parkersburg native, has penned, illustrated and published his first children’s book, “Rocket Ship Trip.”
"I originally started writing poetry when I was in high school. I began writing books as a result of a college professor who challenged me to do more with my writing. I've written several other stories about various subject matters. I chose to publish Rocket Ship Trip first since I am also illustrating my own books and felt very comfortable drawing the pictures for that story," Boice said.
Boice lives in Point Pleasant, W.Va. He was born in Parkersburg and grew up in the Washington area. He is a graduate of Parkersburg Catholic High School and West Virginia University at Parkersburg. He moved to Point Pleasant about four years ago when he accepted the job as a production operator at ICL Industrial Products in Point Pleasant.
After being challenged to try various types of creative writing, Boice said he started thinking about the type of book he wanted to write.
"Children's books seemed like a fun type of writing to explore. Having four nephews and two nieces, I read a lot of children's books. I was not impressed by the quality of writing and noted the lack of creativity in the books that I would read to my nephews and nieces. So, I decided to try and write a children's book that would be fun and would teach at the same time," Boice said.
Boice said he worked on the book about a year.
"Since I work full time and travel often, I worked on it when I had the time to devote to the project," Boice said. He plans to write more children's literature.
"I have two other stories completed and have just finished the illustrations for one of them. I'm looking forward to having it published in the near future. I want to continue writing children's books. I have many stories that are in the developing stage. A few stories are character-driven that I envision being a series. Many are content-driven to teach lessons about a variety of subjects. All of my stories are geared toward early readers," Boice said.
"I would like for children to realize that, with a little bit of imagination, learning can be a lot of fun," Boice said.
Boice's book, which was self-published using Create Space, is available for purchase on amazon, barnesandnoble.com and booksamillion.com. A to Z Learning Supplies in Marietta also has books available to purchase.
The Rocket Ship Trip is primarily an early childhood book, targeting ages 0-6, Boice said.
